Michaelis’ Donkey Farm is just outside the charming village of Molyvos on the north coast of Lesbos. Michaelis and his English partner, Liz, operate a programme of treks from the beginning of May until mid-October that attracts visitors from the island’s four main resorts of Molyvos, Petra (5 kms away) Anaxos (7 kms ) and Skala Kalloni (20 kms).

DAY TREKS Leave 10 a.m. Return 3.15pm After choosing a donkey to suit everyone, according to age and weight, Michaelis guides you up into the hills at a relaxed walking pace, through lush green valleys, across dry riverbeds, past olive groves and along hidden mountain paths to the village of Vafios. The scenery along the way is stunningly beautiful and the coastal views stretch right across to nearby Turkey. You have time in Vafios to eat at one of the traditional tavernas before trekking back on a different route. Price 20 euros for adults     16 euros for children under 12 years

EVENING TREKS Leave 6.45 pm Return 10.15pm   Leaving the farm in the late afternoon sunshine, this shorter, flatter trek follows the unspoilt coastline to Eftalou – home to natural healing hot spring water - in time for a refreshing swim and a glass or two of chilled wine or soft drinks. Michaelis makes a fire and cooks a tasty meat barbeque, served with salad, cheese and fruit as the sun sets over the sea.   Michaelis has been known to sing some haunting Greek songs or even break into a dance. Whatever happens, it will be a relaxed, memorable and romantic evening before trekking back to the farm.
